    One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

    Plaquenil and your eyes. A rare side effect of Plaquenil is damage to the eye's retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Using Plaquenil for a long period of time may harm the retina, causing serious vision loss. People with retinal damage from Plaquenil are not aware at first that they are losing vision. The American Academy of Ophthalmology released an updated set of screening recommendations for hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil and chloroquine to account for the many studies that have shown the effects of these medications on the retina 1.     Has anyone experienced anxiety after/ while taking Plaquenil? I’ve taken Plaquenil before with no ill effects but quit taking it as I just got too lazy to remember. Well, i’m Back on it and like after a week of taking it, my anxiety has gotten so bad that my appetite has gone way down and I feel nervous all the time and have negative thoughts like my life is meaningless.
