Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis, prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid All individuals starting Plaquenil treatment should have a baseline ophthalmologic examination within the first year. If the initial ophthalmologic examination is normal and the person is considered low risk, re-testing need not occur for five years. It is recommended that high-risk patients have annual eye examinations. Plaquenil itself probably does not have a direct affect on your immune system - it is a DMARD and is not considered to be an immunosuppressant. However, many with active autoimmune diseases feel that they are not succeptible to many of the common viruses that they are exposed to - somewhat of a silver lining.

This medication is also used, usually with other medications, to treat certain auto-immune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) when other medications have not worked or cannot be used. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs.

Nov 14, 2006 I have been on plaquenil for 8 months and have lost 60 pounds from it this is a good thing also the fatigue is completely gone as is the morning stiffness. Plaq did not do enough to end my flare and get me off pred so doc convinced me to add MTX. She tried to take me off the plaq at my last appointment and I would NOT let her. During remission, you may still need certain medications. When a person is in remission while taking medications, doctors always try to taper steroid use down to the lowest possible dose, and, if possible, to stop using them. Most people are counseled to keep taking Plaquenil long after the disease is quiet. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. If you are taking hydroxychloroquine for symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, your symptoms should improve within 6 months. If your rheumatoid arthritis symptoms do not improve, or if they worsen, stop taking the drug and call your doctor.

Getting the most from your lupus medications Lupus. Dooley says time of day also matters less with Plaquenil® hydroxychloroquine. But, it’s best taken with food. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen and naproxen can give people heartburn or upset stomach, she says, so take them at least two hours before you lie down at night or with medications that protect your stomach.
