Been waiting for a rheumatology appointment for 13 weeks so far which is giving me too much time to think!! After 3 years of joint pain and fatigue and constantly getting a negative rheumatoid factor blood test result, on my last big flare up in Feb the bloods came back as positive for rheumatoid factor with my GP.

Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can take up to six months' constant use before an effect is seen in RA 1. Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. Rheumatoid factor is a protein in your body that attacks healthy tissue. A high rheumatoid factor is indicative of rheumatoid arthritis RA, a painful condition that causes stiff, swollen, painful joints and fatigue. Hydroxychloroquine is considered safe in all trimesters of pregnancy. Due to the high risk of flare in systemic lupus erythematosus when discontinuing this medication, continued Plaquenil use is advised in these patients during pregnancy.

I am worried that when the appointment for the consultant finally comes through my rheumatoid factor will be negative again? Although certain joints are now permanently painful most swelling has gone down.

Rheumatoid arthritis is the most commonly diagnosed systemic inflammatory arthritis. Women, smokers, and those with a family history of the disease are most often affected. Criteria for diagnosis include having at least one joint with definite swelling that is not explained by another disease. Plaquenil was actually first classified as an antimalarial drug, but it is also used to treat certain rheumatic and autoimmune conditions which are unrelated to malaria. Generally, Plaquenil is a treatment option as monotherapy used alone for mild rheumatoid arthritis or as combination therapy with other DMARDs for moderate to severe disease.
