    Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America. Oral 300 to 400 mg daily as a single daily dose or in 2 divided doses. Assess response after 3 months; may attempt to slowly taper after several months of satisfactory response Ang 2005; James 1985; Miller 2019; Vleugels 2019; Woo 1984. Each tablet contains 500 mg of Chloroquine phosphate USP, equivalent to 300 mg Chloroquine base.

    Hydroxychloroquine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Hydroxychloroquine is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus.

  3. Adults An initial dose of 1 g salt = 600 mg base followed by an additional 500 mg = 300 mg base after six to eight hours and a single dose of 500 mg = 300 mg base on each of two consecutive days. This represents a total dose of 2.5 g chloroquine phosphate or 1.5 g base in three days.

    Adults 1 g 600-mg base daily for 2 days, then 500 mg 300-mg base daily for 2 to 3 weeks or 4 to 5 ml 160- to 200-mg base I. M. for 10 to 12 days; change to P. O. as soon as possible. Administer with an intestinal amebicide. Rheumatoid arthritis. Adults 250 mg P. O. daily chloroquine phosphate with evening meal. The usual adult dose for treating malaria is 800 mg initially, followed by 400 mg 6-8 hours later and then 400 mg at 24 hours and 48 hours. The dose for malaria prevention is 400 mg every week starting 1 or 2 weeks before exposure and for 4 weeks after leaving the high risk area. Infections should receive chloroquine prophylaxis 300 mg base po once a week during pregnancy. After delivery, patients with normal G6PD activity should be treated with primaquine or tafenoquine or continue with chloroquine prophylaxis for a total of 1 year. Primaquine can be used during breastfeeding if the infant is found
