  7. Plaquenil isn't a 'sulfa' drug which means a certain sort of antibiotic, the sulfonamides. Plenty of people who are allergic to those sulfa drugs take Plaquenil without any problem. This sounds all very odd to me! Quinine? I never heard of anybody taking Quinine for lupus.

    Sulfate and sulfa are two different things. what you are allergic to is sulfonamides like bactrim, right? These are not sulfates. Sulfate used after a drug name is just the last name of the chemical, its the sulfate salt. It has nothing to do with sulfonamides. I have been allergic to sulfa meds for over 30 years. I have been taking plaquenil for about 8 years with no problems. However, I was givin the generic Plaquenil at first, and I did have a reaction to that - until now I didn't reliese was the same as my sulfa reaction.
